Honors 1984 One-Pager Assignment

Hey guys! I wanted to go ahead and post the instructions for the one-pager assignment that is due April 27th. Please finish reading 1984 by April 20th.

One Pager Directions (This will be counted as a test grade)

A one-pager is a way to visually share key ideas and information from what you have learned. When you create a one-pager, you are trying to use both visual symbols and important words to clearly and concisely share your most important takeaways with someone else.

For this one-pager, I am providing you with a template:

If you do not have a printer, please draw this shape on your paper for the assignment.

Here is what it MUST INCLUDE:

  • A border of key quotations from the text
  • The top half should focus on symbolism and themes from the text, including both words and images
  • The bottom half should focus on key characters from the text and how they develop, change, and interact. It should also include both words and images.
  • You may add other symbols, drawings, and words that represent the reading as you wish.

Here is an example of what a one-pager will look like:

Remember the PowerPoint we went over before starting 1984? Use it for helpful information on symbolism, themes, characters, and important terms from 1984. Click here to access ⟶ 1984 Powerpoint PDF

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. The last time to have access to check out 1984 is tomorrow, April 15th from 9-11. I also found a pdf copy here: https://www.planetebook.com/free-ebooks/1984.pdf

Its and It’s homophone practice & read “The Math Instinct” by Keith Devlin on pg. 183 in your black collections textbook.

The Math Instinct is a Math Essay. Many students may feel that the subjects of math and science are foreign to their daily lives. This text suggests a new way of looking at such subjects– as instincts. Because this is a math essay, you may struggle with some of the vocabulary words. If you don’t understand a word, make sure to look it up. Your vocabulary words you will need to pay close attention to are: obliterate, impetus, and repertoire. Make sure to read page 187 for more information about technical meanings. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Happy National Poetry Month!

Happy National Poetry Month!

When I was in high school, I used to loathe studying or writing poetry. I always thought it was so hard to understand, and that it didn’t teach me anything. I was so wrong! After studying American Literature in college, I discovered so many amazing poets that changed the way I viewed poetry and language. I know many of you feel the same way I did about poetry, but I’m here to tell you that not all poetry is boring and hard to understand.

E.E. Cummings is one of my favorite poets, so I thought I would share a love poem of his, “i carry your heart with me”

I know many of you love to read Edgar Allen Poe’s “Annabel Lee” because it is creepy and dark. Read “i carry your heart with me” in a creepy voice out loud. Sounds sort of disturbing, right?

Learning to Write Poetry

While I was in  the English- Creative Writing Bachelor’s program, I had to learn a lot about Free Verse poetry, form, rhyme scheme, and how to create my own. When I first signed up for the class, I thought, “There is no way I am going to be good at this.” But, I quickly learned that everyone has creativity. You just have to find a way to express it. I thought I would share with you all a poem I wrote for an assignment after Hurricane Michael in 2018.

Do any of you have a favorite poem or poet? If not, I strongly suggest you check out poets.org to find one! I will see you all at our Zoom Call on Friday! Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything. Remember, your assignment is due Monday, April 6th, and can be sent via Remind, text, or by submitting it to the Google Form.  (Click the words Google Form, and it will take you right to it!)
